Transportation Challenges Highlighted at Forum

Southwest Minnesota could reap a lot of benefits by filling in "the doughnut" - the blank spot on the map of Minnesota's four-lane highways, area transportation representatives said Monday. The problem is the region doesn't have enough money to maintain all the highways it already has.

"That makes it tough," Patrick Weidemann of Minnesota Department of Transportation District 8 told audience members at Monday's regional meeting of the Minnesota Transportation Alliance.

The issue of transportation infrastructure is closely tied to jobs and the economy, especially in southwest Minnesota, said Margaret Donahoe of the Transportation Alliance. "The economy is really reliant on transportation systems to move goods, and to move people," Donahoe said. Improving the infrastructure also improves safety.
