Learn more about the proposed constitutional amendment dedicating 100% of the motor vehicle sales tax revenue to highways and transit
On November 7, 2006, Minnesota voters
will be asked if they support the dedication of all revenue
from the motor vehicle sales tax to highway and transit purposes.
The exact language of the amendment can be seen here: Amendment
Language.
The proposed constitutional amendment provides an opportunity to both increase and consitutionally safeguard revenue from the motor vehicle sales tax for highways and transit at a time when our transportation systems desperately need more funding.
Legislation passed in 1981 -- 24 years ago -- would have phased-in the dedication of all revenue from the motor vehicle sales tax to highways and transit. Unfortunately, the law was not fully implemented and was ultimately repealed. In the meantime, our transportation system has lost around $6.5 billion in funding from the motor vehicle sales tax that should have been dedicated to highways and transit.
